Krishna Das
Bio:
Sharing his heart through music and chanting is the basis of Krishna Das' own spiritual work;his way of serving the Divine within himself and others. In the winter of 1968, Krishna Das met Ram Dass, who had just returned from his first trip to India. After living and traveling with Ram Dass... more

Interview with Krishna Das
YM: Congratulations on the new release! What makes this 2 CD set unique?
KD:
I have been singing these chants since they were originally recorded and they have gotten deeper over the years and more easy to enter into... I felt like people would like to meet them again in a new way.

YM: Why a Live Album?
KD:
Live is the best. With everyone together singing..it is just very
difficult to get a great recording that way. We felt like we did a good
job of capuring the beauty and excitement oif the moment unrehearsed
and free.

YM: Please talk about the new record label you just signed with and
how they are bringing Kirtan mainstream.
KD:
Terry Mc Bride and Nettwerk records feel that kirtan should be heard
by more people...I can't argue with that, since I think that chanting
can help anyone who does it to feel better. They are trying to do what
record companies do to make that happen and they are a wonderful
group of good people whose hearts are in the right place. P.S. I
still sing the same way I do whether there is 10 people or 10,000, so
it will be interesting to see what happens.

YM: How do you account for the rise and explosion of Kirtan over the
last ten years?
KD:
People are hurting and they want to feel better and find a way to live
in this world without fear and  with an open heart and chanting is a
way to do that.

YM: Why sing?
KD:
Why not? Birds sing.

YM: Why do we need mantra now more than ever?
KD:
We need it just as much as ever.

YM: What would you say to the people that feel angry with the state of
the world right now?
KD:
Get angry  with ourselves for losing touch with the love inside. If we
don't have that, how can we help another person? You have to have a
piece of bread to share. PS WE made it this way and WE can change it.

YM: Most people are not in a position to go to India or take a year
off from their life to have a spiritual awakening. How can one find it
HERE, while still involved in the day to day activities?
KD:
You find it where you are. That is where it is..not somewhere else.

YM: What do you love?
KD:
Love

YM: What is your favorite part of working in this "industry'?
KD:
Squeezing my harmonuium

YM:  Who is on your i-pod? (Who do you listen to?)

KD:
Reverend Gary Davis
Mississippi John Hurt
Blind Willie Johnson
Ray Charles
Lama's Chant
Van Morrison
Steely Dan
Hank Williams
DR Dre
Michael Franti

YM: What is on the horizon for you personally and your music?
KD:
More chanting

YM:Thank you for joining us, where can we find out more about you?
KD:
It's all on the internet (krishnadas.com). The thing is to find out more about
yourself.... that's where all love is to be found. I am trying to
find that myself.
