Anantasana

Ananta is the name of Vishnu’s couch. Vishnu is known as the supreme God in the Hindu faith. He rests on Ananta, the immortal and infinite snake.

1. Lie on your left side with your left arm stretched beyond the head in line with the body.

2. Bend the left elbow and rest your head in the left palm, which should be placed just above the ear. The upper arm should be as flat on the floor as possible. Take a peek down at the rest of your body and note that it is in a straight line as it extends back. Don’t stick your butt out.

3. Bend the right knee and hook the right big toe with the first two fingers on your right hand.

4. Extend the right arm and right leg up vertically together. There is a tendency for the body to lose its posture, so stay straight, even though it is more challenging to balance like this. Try to keep your breath deep and free. Don’t strain. If your leg doesn’t extend upward completely straight, that’s fine. With regular practice, your hamstrings and pelvis will open more, allowing the leg to eventually stretch up further. A belt or a strap could also aid in this process.

5. To release, slowly lower the leg and release on to your back. Relax and take a few natural breaths.

This pose benefits the pelvic region from such activity and stretches the hamstrings. Some claim that it will relieve backaches and even prevent hernia. Try it out and see how it works for you. Different people get different results. As long as you practice mindfully and remain aware of sensation without pushing past your boundaries, the healing you desire will result.
